Shoulder Pain Q & A

What causes shoulder pain in athletes?

The extensive network of bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscles in your shoulder allow for quite a few possible causes of shoulder pain. Some of the most common pain-causing shoulder injuries in athletes include:

  • Labral tears
  • SLAP (superior labrum anterior to posterior) tears
  • Bicep tendinitis
  • Tendon tears
  • Rotator cuff tendinitis
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Internal shoulder impingement
  • Shoulder instability
  • Shoulder dislocation
  • Shoulder fractures
  • Glenohumeral internal rotation deficit
  • Scapular rotation dysfunction

Shoulder injuries are most common among baseball players and other athletes who regularly pitch a ball or reach overhead. But, these pain-causing shoulder injuries can also occur during tackle sports, during a fall, or because of a blow to the shoulder joint.

When should I see the doctor for shoulder pain?

If you have any new shoulder pain, whether it starts during sports, while you’re asleep, when you're washing your hair, or at some other time, it's important to see Dr. Golan for an evaluation as soon as possible.

This becomes crucial if you have additional issues like arm weakness, shoulder swelling, reduced shoulder movement, or bruising. Shoulder pain can quickly increase, and you could lose the use of your shoulder if you try to ignore the problem. Instead, Dr. Golan offers advanced solutions to end your shoulder pain permanently.

How is shoulder pain treated?

First, Dr. Golan performs a complete shoulder assessment to find the damage inside your shoulder. Depending on your diagnosis, he may prescribe nonoperative care first. Some shoulder injuries may respond to activity changes, physical therapy, and other conservative care.

If you have a complex shoulder injury or severe shoulder pain, Dr. Golan may recommend minimally invasive shoulder arthroscopy. Using tiny incisions, he can repair labral tears, rotator cuff damage, biceps tendons, and other shoulder area damage.

Minimally invasive techniques like arthroscopy greatly reduce surgical risks, minimize bleeding, relieve your pain, and allow for faster healing compared with old-fashioned shoulder surgery.

Following shoulder surgery, Dr. Golan creates a personalized rehab plan to meet the needs of your particular sport. His goal is to stop your shoulder pain while transitioning you safely back to full form.

As a premier shoulder pain specialist, Elan Golan, MD, has your unique needs in mind as you heal and return to your sport. He's ready to tailor a plan for you, so don't hesitate to call the office or use the online booking tool now.
